The Cleveland Orchestra presents Disney’s The Muppet Christmas Carol in Concert featuring the complete film, with the score performed live to picture. The Muppets present Charles Dickens’s classic holiday tale, with Kermit the Frog playing Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk of stingy Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine), and features many more of your favorite Muppet characters. This special holiday event is fun for the whole family!

Experience a fresh take on an American classic. Béla Fleck, “arguably the greatest living banjo player in the world” (NPR), marks the centennial of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with a dazzling new banjo transcription of this beloved showpiece. Conductor Brett Mitchell rounds out this all-American evening with orchestral gems by Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber, and William Grant Still.

Sensual and rhapsodic, Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun conjures the dreamlike atmosphere of a mythological forest on a sunlit afternoon. Composer-conductor John Adams contrasts this with his City Noir, a wild symphonic thrill ride inspired by 1940s and ’50s film noir. Gabriella Smith’s striking ode to the forests of her native Northern California also provides a showcase for Severance’s newly restored Norton Memorial Organ and organ virtuoso James McVinnie.

This pairing of Prokofiev symphonies includes two works of differing character: his intense Second Symphony — “a piece of iron and steel", as he described it — and his most popular symphony, the uplifting, irrepressible Fifth.

Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin tells of a girl forced to lure a wealthy mandarin to his tragic fate. Its theme of the tragic, dark passions between men and women is equally as gripping and powerful — and controversial — as when it first premiered.

Karina Canellakis leads the Orchestra in a program featuring two composers who are strongly associated with the piano — as both composers and performers. Each also drew on their native country’s rich folk-music heritage, and these works are filled with lively dance steps and nostalgic melodies.
